I've been digging through my art archives today. I had the strange idea that I would like to do a longer term retrospective, realised I couldn't because my hard drive with all my ancient scans on it is back at my own house, and then realised that I didn't need scans - I'm staying with my parents! All the originals are here!

Well, my friends. I found some weird shit. (Some very, very sad shit as well.) Not all of it was art, although I do now have art examples going back to 2010 - and it's very obvious that some of my shaky early digital work is because, well, I was shaky on the computer! Compare my physical-media 2013 Great and Terrible art to my 2014 digital-media Padme and Anakin art and, well.

Anyway, without further ado, a list of the Weird ShitTM:
  • An AQA qualification in team working that I picked up somewhere along the way, in 2009

  • A letter from my deceased grandmother, which made me cry

  • Really good hand-drawn heavy metal posters - I replicated Ozzy and Dio's logos perfectly

  • My first ever hand-drawn pornography, from when I was probably about fourteen

  • An awful lot of kink art, just. there. 2008-2013 approximately.

  • A letter from a teacher telling me to enjoy Oxford, which I missed my grades for by two marks

  • Anatomical studies including the phrase 'are heads meant to be bigger than arses?'

  • Some really, really disturbing poems about how humanity is doomed to die and we should hurry up about it

  • Stupendously good character designs

  • Old gender thoughts

  • Poetry indicating I have always been tired

Today I started working on my 2018 Best Of art post - I've identified what pieces I want to include, but I'm going to hold off on creating the template framework and posting for a little bit, preferably till after Christmas. It's not like I'm waiting on a December entry - after being like 'oh god what if I have to include tumblr protest titties' I realised I'd drawn three quality pieces this month that are eligible.

I was looking back at last year's and I feel really good; I think this was the year I got serious about my art. I can see several months in which I was scraping the bottom of the barrel - April and July in particular - whereas this year I was so spoiled for choice I was choosing some months based on what pictures would look good together.

Last year's stuff does still hold up - it's not like I hate it or anything, at least not the bits I deemed worthy of the year in review - it's just that this year's is so much better, more prolific, more daring.

Artist friends, are you planning any kind of year in review post, and if so how are you doing it?

Today's been a busy day on my art blog.

First off, today's big deal art, a painting of Breq floating in space from Imperial Radch - spoilers for Ancillary Mercy! I'm quite chuffed with it. I did it yesterday but held off posting bc I was trying to stay off tumblr.

I had my scheduled reblog of old art, showing ZGRXF, Esaci's best friend from the big game. I really wanted to draw a dragonborn and get really into it, so I asked my friend if I could draw his character. Z's something of an arrogant git quite often, but they're Esaci's arrogant git - and Esaci is a reckless, wrathful, stubborn git when ze wants to be zirself.

And then this evening I've been playing around with CSP's Colorize function - I don't like it most of the time - but it did produce this beautiful portrait of Sir Bors. He's the only male character I've ever played and like, he was a giant psychic metal man, he was only a man because the 70s British government thought Arthurian knights should be. End of the Line was a fucking wild ride and I can't do it justice in a few words, but Sir Bors was a really great character and I'm glad I had him.
